Some Illustrations of the Third Law
1. When a bullet is fired, the bullet moves forward with a great velocity (action) and the gun experiences equal and opposite reaction in the backward direction (reaction). The mass of the gun being very large compared to that of bullet, the relative distance moved by the gun is very small.
2. In a rocket, the burnt gases are exhausted out in vertical downward direction with a great force (action). These gases exert an equal and opposite force on the rocket in upward direction (reaction) due to which a rocket is pushed up.
3. When a balloon filled with air is hold with its mouth in an upside down position, is released, the air inside rushes out downward(action) and the ballon goes upward (reaction).
4. A man standing on the ground presses the ground with a force equal to his weight and in turn ground pushes the man upward with an equal force. Force applied by man is action that exerted by ground is reaction.
5. A ship floating on water- for a ship floating on water, its weight acts downward is the action and the upthrust of water is the reactions.
