Christian Huygens was a Dutch mathematician and physicist. He made very important contributions to the scientific revolution that started at the beginning of the 17th century.
In 1656, he patented the first pendulum clock.This greatly measured the accuracy of time measurement.
Introduction
In our daily life, we measure different substances for different purposes. The measurement is used at our homes, markets, schools, offices and everywhere. For example, the carpenter measures the length, breadth and height of furniture while making them, we use the watch or clock to know the time; the tailor measures the lengths of our body parts before sewing clothes; we measure the height and weight regularly; the shopkeeper measures the amount of commercial goods and some commercial goods are marked with certain value of mass and so on. It means, in every step of our life, measurement takes place and plays an important role. During the process of measurement, one of the substances regarded as unknown quantity is compared with another regarded as known or standard quantity. This is called measurement.
Measurement is the comparison of an unknown quantity with the known or standard quantity. The quantity which is to be measured is called unknown quantity and it is compared with another known quantity which is called standard quantity or known quantity. For example, while measuring the length of the book, it is compared with the length of the scale. In this case, the length of the book is unknown quantity whereas the length of the scale is known quantity.
